CLAIRE CREWS

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | RHODE ISLAND WEAVING CENTER

BIOGRAPHY

Claire Crews (b. 1993) is a writer and textile artist originally from Prescott, AZ, and Salina, KS. She holds a BA from Hampshire College and an MFA in Literary Arts, focusing on fiction, from Brown University. Her prints and weavings have been exhibited at APE Gallery in Northampton, MA, and House of Poems Gallery in Florence, MA, as well as in solo shows at Big Wheel Press Gallery in Easthampton, MA, and Paper Nautilus in Providence, RI. Currently, she serves as a visiting professor in Studio Art and Weaving at Deep Springs College in eastern California.

VISION

Claire Crews’ weavings are abstract compositions that engage in a dialogue with their surroundings. She primarily uses wool sourced from small ranches in Arizona and New Mexico. In her artistic practice, she emphasizes repetition, tone, shape, and shadow, while also exploring the architectural elements and utilitarian possibilities of textile and print design.
